About the film
Hagai Levi’s work is widely regarded as exceptional, and this series stands at the pinnacle of his creative achievements. His unique interpretation of the memoir blends outstanding performances and stunning cinematography to explore far more than history — it is a profound psychological and spiritual journey. Set in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam, the story follows 27-year-old Jewish woman Etty Hillesum as she begins therapy with psycho-chirologist Julius Spier. What begins as introspection blossoms into a radical inner transformation, documented through her diaries. Through love, mentorship, and the looming threat of persecution, Etty discovers that even when everything tangible is stripped away, the human spirit can remain free, leading her toward extraordinary acts of compassion and solidarity.
