A Powerful Opening: SERET London 2025 Launches with Emotion and Excellence

The 14th edition of the SERET International Israeli Film Festival in the UK commenced in London with a poignant and vibrant opening night, celebrating the resilience and creativity of Israeli cinema. Held at the Ham Yard Hotel, the event brought together filmmakers, actors, and cinema enthusiasts for an evening that underscored the unifying power of storytelling.
Odelia Haroush's Opening Address
Odelia Haroush, Co-founder of SERET, delivered a heartfelt speech acknowledging the challenges faced since October 7th and emphasizing the festival's commitment to cultural expression. She stated:
"We are here tonight because we believe in the power of culture. Culture doesn't just entertain—it connects. It reminds us of our humanity, it gives voice to our stories, it opens conversations, and it brings light even in the darkest times."
Haroush also highlighted the unique qualities of Israeli cinema, stating:
"Israeli cinema has always stood out due to its rawness, depth, and reflection of the complexities of Israeli society. The unique stories that come from Israel’s diverse cultures and its ongoing conflicts offer something that’s not only deeply personal but also universally relatable."
Honouring Esteemed Guests
The evening featured a lineup of distinguished guests from the Israeli film industry:
Sasson Gabay, lead actor in the opening film Bliss and the TV series Kugel.
Shemi Zarhin, director of Bliss.
Erez Tadmor, honoured with a retrospective of four of his films.
Noa Koler, acclaimed actress in Israeli cinema and television.
Nelly Tagar, celebrated actress and festival regular.
Mili Avital, actress now residing in London.
Ornella Bess, French-Israeli actress visiting from Paris.
Shirit Kedar, board member and creator of one of the festival's short films.
Itay Tamir, producer behind several featured films.
Roy Assaf, actor, writer, and director featured in five films this year, including Cabaret Total.

The opening night set the tone for a week-long celebration of Israeli cinema, featuring a diverse array of films, documentaries, and series that reflect the depth and complexity of Israeli society. The festival continues to serve as a platform for cultural dialogue and artistic expression.
