A Night of Resilience, Unity, and Cinematic Brilliance: SERET International Film Festival Launches 11th Berlin Edition
The atmosphere inside the iconic Colosseum Cinema in Berlin was electric as the 11th edition of the SERET International Israeli Film Festival officially opened its doors. Bringing together film enthusiasts, cultural figures, and members of the local community, the opening night gala delivered a powerful reminder of the enduring strength of storytelling, human connection, and artistic expression.
Amidst a warm and expectant audience, co-founder Odelia Haroush took the stage to welcome attendees to what marks one of the most significant chapters in the festival's decade-plus history. Acknowledging the extraordinary challenges faced in the lead-up to this year’s event, Haroush delivered a poignant, resolute address that captured the true spirit of the festival.
"Eleven years of bringing Israeli cinema: our stories, our voices, our humor, our pain, our hope, to this city," Haroush reflected. "I will not pretend that this year was an easy one to get here. Since October 7th, we have faced obstacles that we could not have imagined when we first launched this festival. Doors that used to open for us have closed. Partners who once stood beside us have stepped back. There were moments, I will be honest with you, when even we asked ourselves whether we should continue."
Yet, as the packed theater stood witness, the commitment to cultural dialogue prevailed.
"And yet, here we are," Haroush continued to resounding applause. "We are here because we believe, more than ever, in the power of culture. We believe that when politics divides, culture can connect. We believe that a film can open a door that a headline slams shut. We believe that sitting together in a dark cinema, laughing at the same moment, holding our breath at the same scene, crying at the same ending. that this is not a small thing. It is, in fact, one of the most powerful things we have. So tonight, more than in any of the ten years before it, opening this festival is an act of hope."
The opening address highlighted the critical partnerships that made the 11th edition possible. Haroush extended special gratitude to Mr. Guy Gilady, Israeli Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the State of Israel in Germany, who spoke to the audience, as well as the essential venue partners who stood firm in support of cultural exchange.
Expressing deep appreciation for Colosseum Kino and Kino Central, Haroush emphasized their steadfast support: "Two cinemas, two teams, who chose courage over comfort. At a time when so many venues turned us away, when so many said it was simply 'too complicated' to host us, you said yes. You opened your doors, and your screens, to us. You understood that a festival like this needs a home, and you gave us one."
Following Haroush׳s moving remarks, artistic director and festival co-founder Patty Hochmann took the stage to introduce the opening night feature film, BELLA. Highlighting the film's unique narrative and production background, Hochmann captured why the choice was so fitting for the evening.
"Tonight, we are so proud to open with the film BELLA," Hochmann shared. "This film is a beautiful piece of work, but what makes it truly remarkable is the spirit behind the camera. It is the result of a deep and genuine collaboration between Arabs and Israelis. In a world that often highlights our differences, BELLA shows us what is possible when we work together toward a shared creative vision. It is a story of cooperation and mutual respect, and we couldn't think of a better way to open this 11th anniversary."
The screening of BELLA set an extraordinary tone for the rest of the festival, sparking laughter, reflection, and vibrant conversation long after the credits rolled.
